How to spend 6 months in Europe without a visa

Short answer: As a visa-free visitor you can spend at most 90 of any 180 days in the Schengen Area, so a 6-month trip needs about 3 months inside Schengen and 3 months in European countries outside it, such as the UK, Ireland, Cyprus or the Western Balkans. Each of those countries has its own visitor rules. For 6 months in one Schengen country, you need that country’s long-stay visa.

Plan A: 90 days in, then 90 days out

DatesWhereSchengen days used
1 Apr – 29 Jun 2027France, Italy, Spain (any Schengen countries)90
30 Jun – 27 Sep 2027Outside Schengen, e.g. UK and Ireland, or the Balkans0
From 28 Sep 2027Back in Schengen if you wantUp to 90 more, to 26 Dec 2027

The simplest pattern. Your first Schengen day (1 April) drops out on 28 September, so that is the earliest you can come back, and from then a new 90-day stay is possible. Repeat it and you can spend a year in Europe with half of it in Schengen.

Plan B: two shorter Schengen stays

DatesWhereSchengen days used
1 Apr – 15 May 2027Spain and Portugal45
16 May – 30 Jun 2027Outside Schengen0
1 Jul – 14 Aug 2027Italy and Greece45 (total 90)
15 Aug – 27 Sep 2027Outside Schengen0

The catch: the six weeks outside in May and June gave nothing back, because the April days stay in the window until late September. On 1 July you have exactly 45 days left, so 14 August is the last day you can stay, and you cannot return before 28 September.

Where to spend the months outside Schengen

European countries outside the Schengen Area include the UK, Ireland, Cyprus, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Georgia. Each sets its own visitor rules, which differ by passport. See countries outside Schengen for a comparison with official sources.

Common questions

Can I spend 6 months in Europe without a visa?

Yes, if only up to 90 days of any 180 are inside the Schengen Area and the rest are in countries outside it whose own rules allow your stay. For 6 months in a single Schengen country, you need a long-stay visa.

Can I do 90 days in Schengen, then 90 days out, then 90 days in again?

Yes, if each 90-day stay is continuous. After a 90-day stay starting 1 April 2027 and ending 29 June 2027, the earliest return is 28 September 2027, and you could then stay up to 26 December 2027.

Does time in the UK or Ireland count toward the 90 days?

No. Neither is in the Schengen Area. Each has its own visitor rules.
